'Activator' - Hauraki 45 - Cruiser / Racer (Photos courtesy of Boating
New Zealand)
Designed to satisfy the requirements of an experienced Auckland based
yachtsman, the 'Hauraki 45' badging of this fast cruiser describes the
rich cruising grounds that are available to the population of the 'city
of sails'.
The interior reflects the intensive summer family cruising that the
yacht will be put to, with a comfortable master cabin with ensuite head
and twin guest cabins that can be configured to meet the needs of both
a young family and the need to cater for occasional guests. A large galley
and dinette area plus a day head occupy the mid sections of the yacht.
The cockpit layout is carefully designed to meet the requirements of
sailing with youngsters and with guests who may have little sailing experience,
the boat can be readily sailed short handed and the seating is arranged
such that guests can be part of the sailing experience without feeling
intimidated or 'in the way'.
The alloy mast is fractional rigged, with twin swept spreaders precluding
the need for a back stay; the top mast runners intended only for serious
off shore work, rather than local round the buoys or short course racing.
The sail plan once more echoes the requirements for easy short handed
sailing, with self tacking headsails, a snuffer launched and retrieved
gennaker and a simple main sheet system that relies on a high load hydraulic
vang controlling the stiff, carbon fibre boom rather than a traveller.
Construction is well proven strip planked cedar, with epoxy and stitched
triaxial E-glass skins, for a stiff, quiet and relatively low cost hull.
Decks are specified in epoxy/glass sheathed ply/foam/ply. The first vessel
was built at Vaudrey
Miller Yachts Ltd
